Orlando, The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour
The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, founded in 1938 and located just 15 minutes north of downtown Orlando, is one of these lovely side trips that combine beautiful scenery, a bit of local history, some close-up exposure to local wildlife and vegetation with a resting outing in a slow-moving 18-passenger pontoon boat, all complete with expert (and sometimes humorous) narration provided by the boat’s captain.
The tour takes you through 3 lakes: Lake Osceola, Lage Virginia and Lake Maitland. On this gorgeous day, with brilliantly blue skies, the boat whisked us past hundreds of beautiful water-front estates, many of which were originally built in the 1920s and originally sold for $20,000, while fetching between $500,000 and several million in today’s booming Central Florida real estate market. Even boathouses are worth between $30,000 and $40,000.
In Lake Virginia we came up close to the grounds of Rollins College, one of the top rated private liberal arts colleges in the South Eastern United States, founded in 1885 by New England Congregationalists. Rollins College is the oldest recognized college in the say of Florida with a small student body of 1,700 students, housed on a beautiful 70 acre Mediterraean Revival Campus. Our expert captain / tour guide mentioned that tuition at the college is $38,000 and the ratio of students to professors is 12:1.
Condos are located right next to the college, selling this day for between $450,000 to $1 million. As we approached the narrow Venetian Canal that would take us from Lake Virginia to Lake Maitland, our captain made us aware of all the interesting vegetation growing alongside the canal: Egyptian papyrus, Spanish moss (an airplant and not a parasite), the Princess flower, colourful bougainvilleas and resurrection fern. We saw a variety of birds, including an Osprey eagle, a snake bird, a great blue heron and a white egret, which used to be the good luck bird of the Seminole Indians.
On Lake Maitland we learned that there was an alligator cave from which 150 alligators were removed into the Florida Everglades to prevent a rather hazardous collision between local wildlife and civilization.
Along the Venetian Canal we also saw variegated ginger and banana trees, as we slowly passed under the arched Palmer Avenue Bridge. Philodendrons, palmgrass, bamboo, a plant called firespikes and an interesting arrangement of “air potatoes”, round tubers hanging down from a tree branch, adorned our journey through the canal.
At 450 acres and 30 feet deep, Lake Maitland is the largest of the 3 lakes covered by the boat tour. A barrier controls the water level and interestingly, the lakes all drain northwards into the St. John’s River which flows into the Atlantic near Jacksonville. The Kraft Azalea Gardens, located on Lake Maitland on Alabama Drive off Palmer Avenue, feature thousands of azaleas, tropical shrubs and trees. Azaleas are in full bloom Jan through March.
Our expert captain also pointed out various mansions that have been used as backdrops in various movies and commercials. Lake Maitland also features several small islands with rather unclothed looking trees that home colonies of cormorants, fishing birds that consume up to a pound of fish a day.
We slowly made our way back from Lake Maitland to Lake Osceola where our resting and scenic boat tour came to an end. On this gorgeous day it was a mythologic outing that provided an appropriate historical context for a further exploration of the beautiful city of Winter Park.
The Scenic Boat Tour, a Winter Park institution for nearly 70 years now, is located at the end of Morse Avenue on the shores of Lake Osceola. It is a very inexpensive outing at $8 for adults and $4 for kids (children under 2 ride free). Boat tours run each day from 10 am to 4 pm (except Christmas). 14 Tips for a Stress Free Flight
Traveling can be a stressful event and airplane travel is tops on the list of the stressors that we experience on what is supposed to be an exciting and fun event. A few easy steps can remove most of the stress of air travel.
Things to do before travel day:
1) Pack your bags. Make sure all your packing is done at least the night before and that you have all your bags in one central location for easy and complete loading into your automobile or taxi.
2) Have all your travel paperwork organized and in one central location.
3) Make a checklist of all the things you want to check to secure your home before you leave and achievement through your home checking off apiece item. Do this at least an hour before you leave your house. Do this and you will never worry if you left your stove on or any of the other tiny nagging worries you might have while on your travel.
4) Be sure your pets are taken care of. Make any kennel reservations well in advance of your trip to be sure you have a reserved spot at a kennel you trust.
5) Call the AIRPORT and airline the day before to see how primeval the advocate you should arrive for a smooth, stress free check in. If they tell you to arrive three hours primeval and you arrive just 30 minutes early, you will probably feel great stresses about missing your flight. Also ask if there are any parking restrictions you should be aware of. Ever since 9/11, when we have a heightened threat level there might be automobile searches before you can park.
6) If you are just taking carry on luggage, many airlines let you pre check in right on the world wide web 24 hours before your flight. That means that you can get and print out boarding passes right from your home. And when you get to the airport, you can go right to the gate and your boarding area without getting into the long check in line. If you have to check baggage, you will not have this option acquirable to you. But if not, it is a great time and stress saver.
Travel day:
7) Leave home in plenty of time to expect busy traffic or happening situations. If it is an hour trip to get to the airport, you might want to leave an extra half hour primeval just in case there are road problems.
If you are checking in bags, be prepared to move in line. If it is a busy time of day at the airfield and you are traveling with a favourite airline, there could be a significant line. Don’t worry about how long the line is. As long as you arrive when the airfield recommended, you will have plenty of time to make it to the front of the line and get checked in. It might look impossible but it will happen so just rest and be patient.
9) Make sure that any “carry on” baggage really is carry on. Otherwise you might get stopped at the gate and have your bag taken away to be stowed with the regular luggage. It will delay and stress you. And it will delay everyone else.
10) When boarding the plane, find your seat and stow your carry on baggage quickly. And then sit down and stay out of the way. There are lots of people trying to do the same thing and we’ve all came across the folks who block the aisle for a long time fussing about something or other while a harried line of boarders is forced to wait. You don’t want to be one of those people. So just get your business done swiftly and efficiently and sit down. You’ll have plenty of time to get up once the plane is in the air.
11) If you have to change planes, it can be a real challenge, especially in the larger airports. If you know the gate you will have to go to, ask the flight meeter for advice to reach that gate quickly. In some airports – like Atlanta – a Delta connection can be a large adventure taking 30 minutes to get from one gate to another. If you know in advance how you have to get to your next airplane, it will be much less chaotic when you get off the first plane. And a much more resting achievement (or run) to your next gate.
12) When the plane lands, patiently move your turn. Whether you near or just wait, you usually won’t get off the plane any quicker. People tend to let the folks in the rows before them get up and go in a pretty orderly fashion. Trying to rush it will only get your blood pressure up and will not be looked upon favorably by your fellow travelers.
13) If you just have carry on baggage, you have successfully finished a pretty stress free flight.
14) But if you have carry on luggage, there is one more step – inactivity for the luggage. Just pick a place around the conveyor belt and wait. Anticipate your bag to be the very last one to come out and be pleasantly surprised when it comes out early.
By following these easy steps, you will find that your stress levels from your air travels will be much less. A well planned trip agenda ensures that those tiny stress points stay tiny stress points and don’t balloon into a full blown crisis. Try it any you will be astonished how just a small amount of up front planning dramatically improves the enjoyment of your travel.
