Herbs are grown and picked the world over in gardens to add flavors to food. There are dozens of different herbal plants acquirable and many of these have related offshoots, apiece with their own distinct characteristics. But over the many, many years that herbs have taken their place in our food, several have come to be used throughout various cuisines. Here are three of the most favored ones:

Basil

Basil, an herb with broad green leaves, has an active history, having first been cultivated over 5,000 years ago in Iran and India. Basil pairs very well with a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, onions, garlic, olives, but really most any summer vegetable. Its specially notable as a primary component of pesto, a staple sauce used in Italian cooking, and it’s also used as an oil or vinegar infusion.

Though basil is known for its presence in Italian food, it is commonly used in other regions, including many Asian countries. It follows that there are various types available, including sweet basil, dwarf basil, Thai basil, and lemon basil.

Basil is ideal used fresh when cooking as heat will degrade the natural oils, so it’s usually added near the end of the cooking process. It’s also superior to tear it apart, and not chop it. This grants it to retain more flavor. It’s also ideal used in its fresh form as it loses flavor after drying.

Basil can be stored for short periods in the refrigerator. It should be wrapped in paper towels and bagged or else it will wilt within a few days.

Basil does ideal when grown in hot, dry conditions and will succumb to frosty conditions. It can be grown indoors as long as sufficient light is provided.

Basil has had a variety of uses throughout the millennia as a medicinal agent. It has been stated to stimulate the appetite and help reduce dysentery, nausea, headaches, anxiety and stomach distress due to excessive gas.

Oregano

Oregano is native to Europe, the Mediterranean, and portions of Asia. It’s study is derived from Greek and means “joy of the mountains”. As such, it had many culinary and medicinal uses in ancient Greece.

Oregano has small green leaves and while used as a fresh addition, it has a more robust flavor after it’s been dried. It’s used in a variety of sauces, as well as cooked alongside vegetables, and meats. Often combined with basil, it contributes much to the distinctive attributes of many Italian dishes.

Given its use in Italian fare, it makes sense that pizza is commonly associated with oregano. Interestingly, oregano reached popularity in USA when soldiers, arriving home from WW2, started to repeatedly request the “pizza herb” they found so tasty back in Europe.

Oregano grows ideal in a warm, dry climate with full sun and well drained soil. In fact, sunlight encourages formation of the essential oils that give oregano its distinct flavor. It’s commonly grown in container gardens but can outgrow them after a few years once it becomes too woody.

Oregano is also highly prized for it’s curative value, and indeed, does contain many antioxidants. Ancient Greeks used it as an antiseptic and a cure for stomach and respiratory problems. The Chinese have long used Oregano to treat fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, it has sedative properties and is brewed in tea for this purpose.

Parsley

Parsley, with it’s small green leaves, is the likely the most familiar herb to many folks due to its present use as a garnish in so many restaurant dishes. It’s another herb that harkens back to ancient Greece where parsley was used to make crowns for winners of the ancient Olympiad. Hippocrates, the dad of modern medicine, used parsley as an antidote for poison.

Besides its use as a display, parsley is considered an all-purpose herb and is used in stews, dressing, stuffing, and with most meats, fish, and vegetables. Parsley is ideal used fresh as its dry version tends to have a woody taste.

Parsley is not as simple to grow as some other herbs but given sound growing conditions, such as deep soil and lots of sunlight, it can be a staple of any herb garden.

Parsley is rich in vitamin A and C. In fact, it has three times the amount of vitamin C as an orange. It’s been used to clear toxins from the body and reduce inflammation as well as to help clear kidney stones, as a diuretic, for rheumatoid arthritis, as a stimulant, to settle the stomach, and as an appetite stimulant.

Well there you have three of the top used herbs on the planet. But there are others of equal standing, and many, many more beyond that. Whatever your favorite, freshly harvested cooking herbs give food that extra boost that set’s it apart when used in proper proportion. And many feel they’re a great natural substitute to more modern health treatments.
