Guadalajara, Mexico’s Most Mexican State

Ever wonder what the perfect marriage between the historic and modern would be like?  What if we add the spring season all year long?  Well, you get none other than the great city of Guadalajara!  It is the perfect union of class, culture, modernism, all topped with the perfect year-round weather which makes for the picture-perfect backdrop.  Let Patawalk (http://www.patawalk.com) introduce you to this magnificent place.

The city of Guadalajara is titled by the city of the same study in Spain.  The study Guadalajara, to be more specific, comes from the Arab language and it means “Valley of Stones or “Stony River.”  It was found by Nuno de Guzman in 1542, with 126 residents; this day it has over a million residents.

Now that you’ve learned a bit about the foundation of this year-round spring city, let me tell you what truly makes it mythologic today.  The Historic Center is the oldest part of the city.  One main area here is the Plaza de Armas, which is kind of like a park.  It is square-shaped, surrounded by gardens, the benches are made out of iron and it has a kiosk, also made of iron brought from Paris.  Another spectacular historical place you must see is the Metropolitan Cathedral.  This is one of those buildings that dates back to the 1500s, this particular one was established in 1616 and is truly an architectural marvel for it is a mixture of Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Moorish.  It also has to towers, which were re-built in the 19th century.  Inside, the cathedral has eleven altars, three central areas, and the roof is supported by thirty columns (much like the ones used in Greece).  Within the vicinity, there’s one very interesting monument known as Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres (Rotunda of Illustrious Men).  This monument was built in memory of distinguished people from the say of Jalisco.  Built in 1952, it is in a circular shape made of quarried stones containing seventeen columns.  What really makes it interesting is that it houses the remains (in small urns) of ninety-eight illustrious people.  If you’re into art, then you have to visit the Palace of the Say Government, which features murals created by one of Mexico’s most famous painters (also a native of Jalisco), Jose Clemente Orozco.   Teatro Degollado (Degollado Theater) is not only a theater, but its ceiling has a painting depicting a scene from the “Divine Comedy”- the epic poem written by the Italian author Dante about a journey through hell, the purgatory, and heaven.  If you would like to visit at least one museum, then go to Jalisco Regional Museum.  Rarely will you have the opportunity to see a complete mammoth skeleton!  But that’s not all; the museum has sections dedicated to Paleontology, Pre-history, History, Painting, and Archeology.  Another interesting building is the Ex-Hospicio Cabanas which was built in 1810 by the Catholic Church as an orphanage.  The building features a neoclassic style of structure and this day it is as a cultural institute featuring art and several murals.  Since you’re visiting the colonial style part of the city, why not experience a tiny of that colonial life and visit the area on a “Calandria”, which are horse-drawn carriages.

After all taking in the magnificence of Guadalajara you’ll surely work out an appetite.  When you visit Guadalajara, make sure to taste the native dishes.  “Birria” is definitely a staple dish of Guadalajara; it is usually goat meat cooked in a spicy sauce/broth which includes chili peppers, ginger, cumin, black pepper, oregano, and clove.  It is usually served with corn tortillas and limes on the side and topped with minced onion and cilantro.  If you’d like to try birria, it is sold at most Mexican-food restaurants but one that really stands out is Las Nueve Esquinas (The Nine Corners).  Tortas Ahogadas (Drowned Tortas) is another classic Guadalajara dish.  A “Torta” is similar to a sub sandwich, but uses oblong-shaped bun that is crunchy on the top but soft in the interior.  The bun is filled with fried pork, but you can get chicken, beans and cheese.  The sandwich is then submerged or “drowned” in a sauce made out of chili peppers and served with a side of radishes and avocados. Hmmm!  Lastly, another more well-known dish is “Posole”.  This is much like the famous menudo, except it has pork or sometimes chicken instead of tripe.  On a swift note, you should know that Guadalajara is so chesty of its culinary creations that it hosts La Feria Internacional de Gastronomia (International Gastronomy Fair) each September.

Accompanying your food you should indulge in the state’s native drink: Tequila!  The drink is nearly synonymous with the city of Guadalajara.  Tequila is actually titled after the small town where it was created and is it lies just outside the city of Guadalajara.  The drink is taken from the native plant, Agave, which is fermented and distilled.  This is an ever growing industry and you can take a tour of three of the most well-known distilleries: Sauza, Jose Cuervo, and Herradura.  The most interesting of the three is the Herradura Tequila distillery because it has kept the traditional and original factory.  This is a complete hacienda and in fact, the owners still reside right there.

If you’re in the mood for some shopping, then visit Mercado Libertad (Liberty Market), which is one of the largest indoor traditional markets in Mexico.  It features over 1000 vendors and here bargaining is like an art.  It’s nearly impossible to not find what you’re looking for.  You can find everything from Mexican candies, wooden toys, food, leather coats, perfumes, watches, radios, clothing, and so much more.  To get a true musical experience then the Plaza de los Mariachis is a must.  Here, you can listen to the world renowned Mariachi music live.  Mariachi music originated in the neighboring town of Cocula, Jalisco but it is now mainly associated with Guadalajara.  What really brought about the association of the Mariachi music with Guadalajara was in 1907 when a group performed in front of the then president, Porfirio Diaz, and the then Secretary of Say of the United States.  Guadalajara has in fact embraced and made this music part of their culture.  It is such an important part of the culture that Guadalajara hosts El Festival del Mariachi y Charreria (The Festival of Mariachi and Horse Riding).  Participants from all over the world including Japan, France, and Belgium can be seen here performing their ideal tunes.  In fact, just last year 542 mariachi musicians played together breaking the record for the largest mariachi group.  Charreria is something that is very much entwined with the mariachi music.  This is the original cowboy rodeo art; here the “charros” (cowboys) perform and compete in different horse riding and roping events.  You can see both the Charreria and the Mariachi performing each Sunday afternoon in the bullring – Plaza de Toros Nueve Progreso.

The city is also host to two other international events: The International Film Festival of Guadalajara and The Guadalajara International Book Fair.  Both fairs, as the study indicates, features participants from all over the world.  The first clean takes place in March and interesting the event last year featured over 200 films.  The Book Fair is indisputably the largest Spanish-language book clean and an astonishing 300 publishing firms from over 30 countries are in attendance.

This great city also offers a tiny something for the kids.  The city’s installation is one of the most impressive in the country and adjacent to the installation is a one-of-a-kind amusement park, Selva Magica (Magic Jungle).   The installation has over 1,500 different animals.  The amusement park has over 35 rides, a dolphin show and even the toucans perform!

Rhodes the jewel of the Greek Islands, lidos and getting there

 

Rhodes was voted 5th in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Most Popular Destination awards in 2008, and it is simple to see why. The island is the 3rd largest of the Dodecanese, part of the South Aegean Greek islands flanking the East coast of Turkey, and is locally known as ‘Island of the Sun’ as it boasts at least 300 days sunshine a year. Rhodes retains a strong Greek influence, whilst openly encouraging visitors, particularly in the South and interior of the island. The pace of life is slow and relaxing, a perfect getaway from the stresses and strains of normal working life. Crime rates on the island are extremely low.

Greek culture is centered on family life, and kids are warmly welcomed in bars and restaurants. There are many historical influences, including the remnants of the Colossus of Rhodes in Rhodes town, the capital of the island, and many archaeological sites from different eras found at many locations on the island No matter what kind of holiday you prefer, Rhodes caters for all tastes, from resting on the beach, shopping, exploring historical sights, watersports and vibrant nightlife.

The North of the island, including Rhodes town, Faliraki, Ixia, Trianda and surrounding areas, is well populated by locals and tourists, and offers a wide choice of activities and attractions for couples and families. The lower end of the East coast, South and West coast are considerably more rural, and offer a wealth of quiet coves alongside more traditional Greek villages. Because of the small size of the island, all aspects are within simple reach by car. Bus and taxi services are also easily accessible and, on the whole, reliable – even though the notorious ‘Greek time’ occasionally applies to the local bus services!

Lindos

Lindos Rhodes is a very favourite destination and only five minutes from Olive Grove Villa, and many visitors find themselves returning year after year. From the dear known ‘ooh-ah corner’ on your approach to Lindos, arguably one of the most breathtaking views in Greece can be seen.Under the imposing 2nd century BC acropolis lies a maze of narrow, vibrant streets surrounded by whitewashed, sugar cube houses with elegant doorways and intricately pebbled courtyards. The 4 beaches, all within easywalking distance of Lindos centre, are also diverse. A large, sandy, family friendly beach with Blue Flag position shelves gently into the crystal clear waters. Several beachside tavernas and WCs are found here, and pedaloes, motorboats and other watersports for the more adventurous are offered during summer. An excellent glass bottom boat trip departs from here, and is a must-do during your stay! Pallas beach is more intimate, and is the home of several excellent tavernas, some of whom will serve you from your sunbed, such as Skala on Pallas beach.    For complete tranquility, head to St Pauls bay, a quaint unspoilt cove, usually peaceful enough to rest while listening to the soothing sounds of the sea. This area is also mythologic for snorkelling amongst the surrounding rocks. The shelved sandy beach close to St Pauls chapel offers spectacular views of the acropolis and St Pauls bay, and a small taverna offers drinks and snacks – and champagne for celebratory drinks after wedding ceremonies, which favourite at this location.   All Rhodes beaches are kept very clean, and because of the sheer number available, none is usually overcrowded. One of the uncommon features of Lindos is that even though during the day the village thrives with visitors, the streets are completely pedestrianised, the only transport being the occasional moped or the traditional Lindos donkeys.   Shops selling a wide range of cosmopolitan goods and gifts line the streets, along with a diverse range of tavernas and bars to suit each taste. One of the ideal ways to spend a lazy afternoon is with a cold frappe in Yiannis bar on the main street while people watching or listening to local chatter. The climb to the acropolis is arduous but worth it, for the views of Lindos, St Pauls bay and the neverending blue sea from the ancient castle walls are nothing short of spectacular. On the path towards the acropolis, Lindean ladies sell traditional, hand-embroidered tableware. If the achievement is too strenuous, take a donkey (Lindos taxi) to the castle walls.   Within the ancient acropolis site is a relief of a ship, carved in 170 BC by the Lindeans. Walk through the Doric columns, up the “stairs to heaven” to the top level of the acropolis, where the part-renovated Temple of Athena stands, constructed during the 4th century AD. Directly below the acropolis, adjacent to the newly built town square, lies the ancient theatre. A good proportion of the seating area carved into the rock remains today.   Also within the village are many chuches in different styles, often with intricate frescoes lining the walls. There are many ‘Captain’s houses’, built the 16th to 18th century, whose exquisite structure is one-of-a-kind to Greece. Many of these have been recently restored under the supervision of the Greek Archaeological Service, and several are now open to the public. Nightlife in Lindos is vibrant and friendly. The majority of visitors experiencing evening culture in Lindos are couples and families, and increasingly favourite wedding parties.Choose from romantic evenings dining on one of the many rooftop tavernas, or resting in one of the many welcoming. All bars are English speaking, and make you feel like a local on your first visit. Local kids often play in the streets in an evening, and kids are welcomed in restaurants and bars until late at night.   There are several nightclubs in Lindos, playing Greek, European and British favourite diversion music. By law, no loud music can be played after 12pm, so the nightclubs are soundproofed. Nightclubs are simple to find in the evening, yet unimposing on the traditional streets of the village. At the top of the village, at ’ooh-ah corner’, an outdoor all-night diversion club, the Ampitheatre, can be found, with great views of the morning sunrise. Free taxis to this venue are acquirable from the town square. Getting to Rhodes could not be easier, the flight time is just three and a half to four hours from most UK regional airports.

The main airlines offering flights to Rhodes Diagoras Airport are Simple Jet, Monarch, Thomson Fly, Thomas Cook Airlines, Viking, Aegean and Olympic Aiways, Jet2 also fly to Rhodes but only from the North of England.

Most services offered are direct flights with the exception of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines who only offer a direct service from London Heathrow to Athens and then aconnecting flight is required from Athens. The flight time to Athens is approximately three hours with the flight time between Athens and Rhodes being one hour.

During the season late May to end of October most airlines offer a direct service. Out of season you are restricted to the slightly longer journey between the two destinations.

The most favourite day for flights is a Wednesday even though flights are availble on a Saturday but more limited.

Easy Jet offer two flights on a Wednesday  then a service on a Thursday Saturday and Sunday from London Gatwick. They have just added a sheduled service from Liverpool starting Might 2010.

Jet 2 only offer a service on a Wednesday from Newcastle Manchester and Leeds Bradford Airports.

Thomas Cook, Thomson Fly, Monarch, Viking all offer a service on a Wednesday and Saturday from most UK London and regional airports.

Aegean and Olympic offer a regular service to Athens and there is a regular service between Rhodes and Athens.

Those travelling from mainland Europe can travel by road or rail. To Pireus just outside Athens where a ferry can be caught directly to Rhodes. The approximate ferry journey is 14 hours from athens to Rhodes.

So you’re engaged…congratulations! One of the most fun parts about getting married is planning that honeymoon trip of a lifetime. And if you haven’t even narrowed it down to a country, much less an island or a resort, don’t worry-many (if not most!) honeymoon couples are in the same boat.

Some couples begin by leafing through travel or bridal magazines and looking for photos that are appealing and romantic-you can do this, but you’re more likely to settle on the best-MARKETED destination rather than the ideal destination for your wants, needs, and style.

The following are questions you should ask yourself-it’ll help you figure out what your options are, and help you ask superior questions of your travel agent…which will help you plan that perfect honeymoon.

When are you going?

Every destination has its high and low seasons-and this is typically a combination of weather and the times of the year that their tourists typically take vacations. Some destinations, such as Hawaii, have very tiny variance in their weather year-round; others, like the Caribbean have a definite hurricane season. Yet it’s important to know that the Caribbean is a very huge place-and different parts have different hurricane seasons, and some parts of the western Caribbean really aren’t hurricane prone at all. Other destinations–such as Central USA and Southeast Asia-have rainy or monsoon seasons. You really need to know the specific destination in order to have a feel for whether or not their “green” season is too “green” (rainy!) for you.

Also, ask yourself if you’re willing to delay the begin of your honeymoon a couple of weeks or months. Summer months are very favourite for weddings, as it tends to be easier for family and friends to get to the wedding; plus, if you’re having an outdoor wedding, the odds of good weather are more in your favor. However, this also tends to be the costly (and sometimes more crowded) season for many honeymoon destinations. Giving yourself a month off after the wedding before leaving on your honeymoon can give you time to rest and wind down from the wedding, write your thank-you notes, and take advantage of the lower prices of what’s known as the “shoulder season” (between high and low season).

Travel time/vacation time

How much time off work are you going to take? And how much of it are you willing to spend on an airplane?

If you’re going on an African safari, you’re going to consume about a day and a half traveling apiece way from the U.S. This is fine if you’re going to be there a couple of weeks, but if those days are coming off your total of 7 days on vacation, you might think about someplace closer. And distance isn’t the only factor: how many stopovers is it going to take to get where you’re going? If you’ve got to land on a main island, then move around for 4 to 6 hours for the “island hopper” flight to take you out to your remote private island retreat, that’s going to consume your pass time too.

A great option, if it’s available, is a red-eye flight, where you sleep on the plane and wake up at your destination, saving a day of pass time.

Language

This is less of a problem than you might think. Unless you’re backpacking around some exotic country, you’re going to find people in restaurants, hotels, and the activity vendors all speak English. One bit of advice: try to learn a few words and phrases in the local language, as you’ll find you’re treated differently if you begin conversations with “hello” in their language, and show you’re willing to make the effort to get along in their country.

Cost

The huge question! First, some statistics: the average U.S. couple spends about 00 for their honeymoon package…and this doesn’t included expenditures once they’re at their destination. When considering a resort that’s NOT all-inclusive, take some time to research the area and find out what meals cost, what a snorkel trip costs, what taxis cost, etc. Tourist agency sites are a good place to start.

Think about staying at multiple hotels on your honeymoon-perhaps one or two nights at someplace really nice to start, then a more moderate property with perhaps less of a view for the remainder.

People, people, people

There are a number of important considerations here. First off, who else is going to be at your resort? Are most of the guests at the resort in your age group? Are they young and adventurous, or older and mostly interested in golf? Does the resort market to families-are you going to find a ton of children splashing around in the pool when you’re trying to have a romantic, resting time? Is the bar going to be lively, with your kind of music? Are you going to feel right at home, or a bit out of place?

Next, let’s speak about density: do you like to be in the middle of the action, with lots of other happy honeymooners all around, or quieter and more secluded? Think about whether you want to be in a hotel with 400 rooms, or a resort with 40 private villas…the experience will be very different. And do you want to be waited on hand and foot, or left alone to explore by yourselves? Do you want to shop, maybe pick up souvenirs or local style clothes, or maybe some artwork? Maybe you want a mix: in Hawaii, favourite combinations would include a few nights in the heart of playground combined with a few nights on the North Shore…on Maui, perhaps a split between the Lahaina/Kaanapali area and the secluded Hana coast.

Finally, how much do you want to learn about the locals, their language, food, and culture? Generally, at the all-inclusive resorts, you’ll find yourselves with other tourists, separated from the local style. If you want to immerse yourselves in the local environment, perhaps think about a smaller hotel, farther from the main tourist areas.

History and culture

Do you enjoy visiting ancient ruins…centuries-old cathedrals…seeing native villages? The beauty of the art, architecture, and history of Greece, Italy, Scotland and Ireland, or Mayan civilizations can make for a mythologic honeymoon experience.

Europe is an obvious destination, but think also about the Mayans and Aztecs in Latin America…Buddhist temples in Bali and Thailand… Angkor Wat in Cambodia…Buddhist and Hindu temples in India. China is becoming a much more favourite destination as well: think about visiting the Great Wall and seeing the Terracotta Warriors.

Accommodations

How sensitive are you to humidity and temperature? This can determine not only the destination, but also the choice of resort, as not all A/C systems are created equal. How close do you want to be to nature? I’ve stayed at mythologic expedition lodges in Africa that didn’t even have complete walls…just mosquito nets to protect you at night. For some, this is a dream come true-for others it might be a nightmare.

How important is your living space in your hotel room? Do you feel claustrophobic easily? Do you like to lounge around in the morning, have breakfast in bed, or do you like to get up and out there exploring the island? Is a spa on-property important to you? Is a view of the ocean from your room important to you…enough to justify the higher price?

Also think about how you typically spend your day on vacation. If you go back and forth from the room to the beach, the pool, the restaurant, you might want a place with ground-level villas rather than have to get on and off elevators all the time. If you’re going to spend most of your days out exploring the island, this might not matter so much.

Nightlife

Are you going to want to go out dancing/clubbing? Or maybe see some native dances or performances? If you’re going to Hawaii, and you ARE looking for nightlife, you’ll probably want to think about Oahu or maybe Maui.

For Mexico, you should be thinking about Cancun or Cabo, rather than some of the more isolated resort areas. If you’re considering the Caribbean, the answer to this question might affect the island or region you select as well. Music: what do you want to hear on your honeymoon? Mariachi bands, steel drums, reggae, or Hawaiian hula…what appeals to you?

Food!

How adventurous of an consumer are you? How about your fiancé? Do you like to try the local food, try many different restaurants? Often resorts will have very good American and European menus, but for trusty local cuisine you’ll have to venture outside the resort.
