Business Travel Tips: Top 5 Business Traveler Nightmares ? and How to Prevent Them

23 March 2012 by
Categories: Travel Tips

Business travel is on the rebound. As the economy continues to grow, companies are unleashing their employees to travel to seek opportunities and work with clients and customers all over the world. Increased numbers of business travelers bring problems as well. Travel delays and other obstacles simply increase with volume, and the more you travel, the more you suffer from them.

But preparation can at least equip each business traveler with the tools to master the business travel environment and reduce or eliminate the obstacles to a successful business trip.

Here Are My Top 5 Business Travel Nightmares — And How To Prevent Or Deal With Them:

1. You’re in danger of missing your flight: you’re stuck in the security line because you didn’t know about some current rule changes. Today, 3-1-1 is the mantra of the business traveler. If you want to carry on – remember containers of liquid holding no more than 3 ounces, all in 1 (and only 1) quart size fix lock bag. But these rules change all the time. Keep up to date on the government carry-on restrictions. It takes a few minutes at home on your personal before you head to the airport. The ideal resource to use is www.tsa.gov. Another substitute would be your airline’s website – if you check in on-line, then it’s just an additional click of the mouse.

2. Your flight’s been cancelled, you’re in danger of missing that critical client meeting and you’re 30th in line at the customer service desk. As a standard practice, your travel agent’s, preferred airline’s or website’s customer service number should be in your cell phone speed dial. At the first hint of a delay, contact one of them directly and ask for the flight status. They have access to information that you don’t and can begin working on alternatives for you. If your flight is cancelled, there are only going to be so many seats acquirable on substitute flights, and your neutral is to get one of those coveted seats before anyone else does. One primeval phone call can get you there.

3. You are receiving the cold shoulder because you used the 6 words that each ticket or gate agent despises. “Do you know who I am” are the six most lethal words any passenger can use. A gate or ticket agent, unlike your colleagues or your clients or customers, doesn’t care who or how important you are. What’s important to them is your study and flight information, which they have in front of them. So leave your “status” at home. Kindness, deference, respect and a tiny empathy go much farther as a business traveler than self-importance when dealing with airline personnel. They are the gatekeepers with a lot of discretion, and treating them properly can make them much more interested in helping you when one of the inevitable flight problems arises.

4. You just realized you can’t rent a automobile (or possibly even get home) because you’ve dropped your only form of finding in the airfield that’s 2000 miles away. Remember that you can’t rent a automobile without a driver’s license and can’t board a plane without your ID. Thus, you must keep your ticket and your ID in a secure place with simple access at all times on the road. Get something to place around your neck or, if that’s not stylish enough, try a separate case, such as the A-Way Ticket Tote. A tiny expenditure for something that will keep your ID in the same place all the time will be a huge help in preventing a disaster or at least keep you from worrying about it.

5. You and your colleagues have been discussing a confidential strategy the entire flight only to find that your competition has been listening from the row behind you. Business colleagues typically discuss their business when they travel together, and if they are going on a trip for a specific purpose, their discussion will probably center on that purpose. But on an airplane you have no intent who is listening nearby. Just be sure that you are guarded enough that you would not be humiliated or your business harmed if your words were published in the newspaper. Be discrete; you really never do know who is listening to you.

International Travel Tips For The Best Family Vacations – Part 2

24 February 2012 by
Categories: Travel Tips

Traveling abroad has it’s own rewards and challenges and it’s good to think and plan ahead for any trip outside the boundaries of your own country if you don’t want unpleasant surprises to crop up. In Part 1 of this article series we covered several tips on what paperwork might be needed as you travel, how to prepare for driving an auto in a foreign country, medical insurance concerns and much more. Now here are more international travel tips that can help you have the ideal family vacations while you are abroad:

* Most major credit cards are often accepted in foreign countries, but just be sure that the ones you have can be used successfully everywhere you intend to go. It might also be a good intent to notify your credit card companies in advance that you are leaving the country and how long you plan to be gone just so they do not flag your statement and deny charges due to suspicion of fraudulent activity.

* Credit cards are also beneficial to use in many cases since the credit card companies will handle all conversion rates for you, which can save you a lot of money because of not having to make those kind of complicated money conversion calculations on your own whenever you buy anything.

* Try to drink bottled water as much as you can to refrain sickness while on the trip. Water calibre can vary considerably from one country or even one area to another, so protect yourself by drinking as much bottled water as you can while on the trip. And refrain putting cover cubes in your drinks as they are usually made with local water and will melt in your drink.

* If you have some health concerns that require treatment, be sure to carry a copy of your medical history along with you in case it might be necessary to get treatment while you are away.

* If you have food allergies, find out how you pronounce the words to describe that food in that country’s language so you can be sure to refrain those foods while you are on your trip.

* Remember that Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for any treatment given outside the US, so determine in advance if additional coverage is needed and buy trip insurance before you leave in that case.

* If you carry cash while away, it’s often a good intent to keep it in a security belt rather than a notecase that is in your pocket. There are many pickpockets in foreign countries that are tremendously skilled in separating you from your money if it isn’t well guarded.

Be sure to read Part 3 of this article series to get even more valuable international travel tips that can help you have the ideal family vacations.

International Travel Tips For The Best Family Vacations – Part 1

Just traveling anywhere presents a certain amount of challenges to make sure that all goes well, but international travel introduces even more variables into the mix that require advance planning to successfully navigate. Of course, traveling in other countries can constitute some of the most memorable times of our life so the rewards are often worth the extra work needed in preparation. Here are some international travel tips that can help you have the ideal family vacations:

* Find out as much as you can about what paperwork will be required of you to enter and leave the country where you are going. What passports and/or visas will be needed? Will you be required to have a copy of your birth certificate?

* Find out if any vaccinations will be needed before you travel to that country. Also if you use medications, are they considered legal there?

* If a foreign language is used, try to get at least somewhat familiar with the basics of the local language just in case it might come in handy.

* If you plan on driving while in the foreign country, find out if you will need an additional driver’s license to do so. There are international driver’s permits that are accepted in 150 countries that might be what you need, and you can find out about it at the aaa.com website. And be sure that you have sufficient auto insurance that applies in that country before driving there too.

* If you plan on using your personal while traveling, check in advance for any necessary equipment such as voltage converters or electrical plugs that will be required in order to plug in and safely use your personal equipment while you are away. Also, how will you connect to the world wide web while outside the country?

* Will you be covered for any medical emergency that might arise while traveling in that country? Many health insurance policies do not extend beyond the borders of the US, so additional trip insurance might be required to be adequately covered.

* Try to get familiar with metric conversions or at least bring along a metric conversion plateau with you so you can comprehend what measurements actually mean as most of the world outside the US actually uses the metric system for measurement and this can be very confusing for Americans traveling abroad if they aren’t prepared.

Dubai Tourism ? Tips You Can?t Miss!

30 January 2012 by
Categories: Travel Tips

This is my third article on a series of articles I have written with Dubai tourism tips. And yes, I will share even more tips here, and to be honest, there is so much to cover about this beautiful city in the United Arab Emirates that I could write for months! This time I’ll share with you more basic information worth knowing in your first visit.

Let’s speak about money.  As you know, money is important to get around any city; luckily Dubai has both national and international banks with the same services you’d anticipate in any major city.  But know that on Dubai banks will only stay open from 8 AM to 1 PM from Saturday to Wednesday!  Yes, this means no noon bank transactions; the only exception is Wednesday, when the bank is open from 8 PM until noon.

Now, if you have credit cards, in Dubai they accept all the common ones, including Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club and American Express. Still, cash is good to have, especially if you plan shopping on small establishment, since the majority of them don’t have a card processing system.  The currency on Dubai is the dirham, and at the time of writing, you can exchange on dollar for 3.67 dirhams.

As for tipping, in Dubai the tipping rate is lower than in the US.  While here, the tipping is 20%, in Dubai is 10% and that is considered acceptable, of course you can give more as a tip.  As a general rule, do what I do and simply reward great service with an according tip, after all that’s what it is about right?

In Dubai the week is different, this might be handy when it comes to businesses. The weekend days are Thursday and Friday, but major closing days takes place on Friday and Saturday.  Establishments often have common hours from 9 to 5 in the majority of cases, some stores even remain open until 10 PM, excellent for people who want to go shopping at night.

These are just some of the tips and information you can find on Dubai travel. I am just scratching the surface here. For a complete tourism guide that will include all the information you could possibly want, check out All Things Dubai.
