Tutankhamen & Treasures of the Pharaohs Visit London

12 January 2012 by
Categories: Vacations

For the first time in 30 years the treasures of ancient king Tutankhamen have left Egypt to go on a mini-world tour and are currently on display in London – the only European city to host the exhibition – until the end of August 2008.

The marvellous exhibition features nearly 130 artefacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamen and other Pharaohs that were interred nearly 3,500 years ago in the unreal Valley of the Kings. On display are some astounding items from the boy king’s tomb such as the royal diadem – the royal crown that Tutankhamen wore while he was alive – and one of the jewel encrusted golden coffinettes that contained the mummified king’s internal organs.

However, the item most closely associated with King Tutankhamen, the magnificent golden death mask will be not travelling with the exhibition as it is prevented by Egyptian law from leaving its homeland. There is not a copy of the mask on display as all the items are trusty artefacts, but one of the display items, the canopic coffinette features artwork very similar to the mask. However, anyone wishing to view the death mask will have to travel to port and visit the Egyptian Museum, from where this exhibition’s artefacts have been loaned.

King Tut reigned over the Egyptians for a period of nine years, approximately 3,300 years ago. He ascended to the throne as a child and suffered a premature death in his teenage years, the cause of which has been subject to much speculation since his tomb was discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. Even though King Tut’s reign was unremarkable it was the discovery of his undisturbed tomb and all the treasures contained within that has guaranteed his immortality. Soon after the discovery certain events happened that led many within Egypt to proclaim that disturbing the tomb had unleashed an ancient curse. It was stated that all involved would meet horrible deaths, lending a degree of intrigue to the discovery story, but the ‘curse’ has long been discounted.

Visitors should grant at least an hour to 90 minutes to see everything on display, even though they are free to stay for as long as they like. However, don’t bother taking a camera inside the exhibition because photography of the artefacts is not allowed, so anyone wanting photographic memories should purchase a guidebook.

Although the treasures of Tutankhamen have been taking a series of short breaks throughout the world they will return to their homeland of Egypt, after visiting metropolis in 2009. The exhibition opened at the O2 in London on November 15th and runs until 30 August 2008.

8 December 2011 by
Categories: Vacations

Are you looking for some great pass ideas? Think about a trip to Southern California for your next family vacation. While Southern California covers a massive area, and there are many fun things to do, here are some great pass ideas that are definitely worth considering for your next trip.

The first three that I have listed are for those who love beautiful scenery, and enjoy outdoor activities. Huge Bear Lake offers beautiful mountain scenery, while Santa Catalina Island and Pismo Beach treat visitors to some of Southern California’s finest beaches. Now, here is some information on apiece of these areas to wet your pass appetite.

Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, California is a four seasons resort community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is approximately 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The area offers a wide range of cabin rentals, and pass rentals for year-round family fun. Activities include boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, skiing, snowboarding and many other fun family activities.

Santa Catalina Island

The island is located just off the coast of Los Angeles crossways the San Pedro Channel. Passenger ferries depart from Orange County in Newport Beach and Dana Point. Glass bottom boats tour the shipwrecks and reefs in the area, and scuba diving is favourite in the clear water. Other activities include snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, world-class golf, para-sailing or resting on the beach.

Pismo Say Beach

Pismo Beach is located near San Luis Obispo. This park offers a wide variety of activities: hiking, swimming, clam digging, surf fishing, camping, and bird watching. Four restaurants are within 2 blocks of the campground. Pismo Beach has plenty of fun for the entire family.

Disneyland

What list of California pass ideas could be complete without mentioning Disneyland? You could spend your entire trip at Disneyland and still probably not see everything. A trip to Disney is a pass highlight for both young and old alike. Disneyland is located near Los Angeles. While visiting the area you might also want to visit Disney’s California Adventure Park, and nearby Universal Studios.

San Diego

Everyone that I have ever talked to that has visited San Diego has enjoyed it. It offers beautiful year-round weather, and there are many things to see and do while you are there. The San Diego Zoo is one of the ideal in the world. Be sure and visit Sea World while you are there for some fun and excitement. Also, visit a nearby beach, go shopping in Old Town San Diego, or take a stroll through Balboa Park.

Whether you visit Huge Bear Lake, Disneyland, San Diego, or one of these other destinations, it will truly be a memorable trip. The main thing is to make time for these special outings with your family, have fun and relax, and create lasting memories. Begin planning that special family trip – you deserve it. Have a innocuous and wonderful trip!

Vincenzo’s gets a visit from the Louisville Dining Diva

17 September 2011 by
Categories: Culinary

Hello my Divanites! The Louisville Dining Diva has been reflecting (yes, I’m gonna go all Philosophical on ya) on the American dining experience. I’ve noticed something about our new Millennium.  Our schedules are so overwhelming; we’ve forgotten how to take time to delight the easy pleasures.

Remember when having dinner was a time to slow down, reconnect with your family and friends, and have a scrumptious, homemade meal? Remember when intake out at a Louisville Restaurant meant it was a special occasion? Remember when restaurants focused on the calibre of the food, atmosphere, and creating a dining experience rather than “turning tables”?

A restaurant chain is a restaurant chain. The food is the same as any other you can get from the same genre of cuisine at any other chain eatery. There’s nothing one-of-a-kind in the experience, but it’s fast, usually hot, and satisfies your hunger.

Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with Restaurant chains. What I AM sayin’… and HEAR me on this… is that we’ve become a society so conditioned to what’s familiar or branded that we’ve forgotten the very reason we go out to eat.

“So Diva,” you ask. “What’s the solution to this problem plaguing the Louisville Dining Community?”

My very stern “mom” look that you can’t see in this blog is locking eyes with yours and proudly proclaiming, “Seek out the restaurants in town that offer something DIFFERENT.”

”But where do we start?” you ask.

Hmmmmm…. Let’s begin with Vincenzo’s! This Louisville picture has been around forever and built a reputation for upscale dining. It’s the kind of place you take your ideal girl, prom date, or theatre dinner partner to enjoy a meal the way it was intended.

And if a certain someone was thinking of “popping the question”, Vincenzo’s would be one of the top suggestions in my book. The recently tweaked luminous décor, high-ceilings, and Renaissance style paintings perfectly set the stage for your special event after the sun goes down. Want a tiny more romance? Try their courtyard area complete with mature trees, umbrella’d tables, and twinkling lights to add that extra sparkle to your evening.

Dining at Vincenzo’s is like a pleasant waltz in the Garden of Eden. Take my advice and order either their new Three Course Theatre Menu or a Fabulous 6 course Champagne Dinner and treat yourself to a Lemoncello Martini. Chef Agostino HAND MAKES the Lemoncello for this cocktail and it is nothing short of Zen in a glass.

Our gracious host, Chef Agostino stopped at our plateau and shared one of his young scholar stories with us. Don’t let his calm demeanor and friendly smile fool you, in his younger days he was quite the cheeky tiny devil. As a young chef novice at Le Caprise in Palermo, he was constantly looking to learn more and improve his craft. But Head Chef’s back in the day were very secretive. Our young Agostino asks his teacher, “Chef, how many eggs did you use to make the mayonnaise?”

The Chef, fearing to lose his job if this gifted usurper learned the secret to his special mayonnaise replied, “It is not your time to know.”

Agostino, being 16, impetuous, and with a curiosity to rival any cat, waited until the Chef was finished, then immediately took the trash out… like a good novice should. While outside, he counted apiece and each egg shell. Sneaky, sneaky, young  Agostino!  To this day, he never revealed to the chef that he learned his recipe secrets by perceptive the ingredient scraps. But what that experience taught him was to be on your toes, take each opportunity you’re offered, and don’t be afraid to pass on your knowledge. In his kitchen, Chef Agostino instructs everyone… even YOU if you are NOT so inclined.

After our Lemoncello Martini’s, my dining companion and I splurged on the Champagne Dinner.  A variety of Antipasti, or Antipasti Imperial, as Vincenzo’s would call it, tickled our taste buds.

Appetites sufficiently peaked, the Rissottino arrived topped with Eggplant and teaming with fresh mushroom, tomato marinara boasting a slightly spicy goodness with a schmear of fresh basil pesto. As Rachel Ray says, “YUMMO!”

Ahhhh,  fish. Delicious and Nutritious. Tonight was no exception. Chef Agostino entranced us with BRANZINO AL POMODORO, or fresh Chilean Sea Bass over a grilled Beefsteak Tomato slice, sweet Bell Peppers, Caper sprinklings, a Jumbo Prawn, and a couplet of Asparagus spears.

As some of you know, Diva isn’t from Louisville. I spent a good good deal of my life living on the Eastern Coast. My father, an avid fisherman, would canvass into the Gulf Stream quite often and bring home dinner straight from the sea. So I have tendency to be tough on restaurants that serve fish.  Vincenzo’s passes the Diva test for fish with FLYING colors! Not only was my fish fresh from the sea, but the flavor combination Chef Agostino used STILL has my taste buds screaming for more!

Our between course intermezzo was a lemon sorbet to sanitize the palate and prepare us for the delights ahead.  There is something about being served something as easy as a lemon sorbet lovingly topped with fresh mint in a martini glass. Try it sometime fellas… you’ll be glad you did.

Next up, we sampled the INVOLTINI DI VITELLO SINATRA aka their famous Veal Sinatra, accompanied with Peruvian fingerling potatoes and  the most tender and flavorful Lamb Chop I’ve had the pleasure of devouring.  Wanna know how to make their famous Veal Sinatra? Check out this video posted on the Vincenzo’s website!

But then, came DESSERT! My favorite part of the meal.  At times, I wish I socialized with my Red Hat friends more often so I could take dessert first and state it was a rule.

Chef Agostino bestowed us with a medley of Tiramisu, Georgia Peach Cheesecake topped with Carmel Sauce, a mini Cannolli, and fresh fruit with Chantilly cream. Vincenzo’s uses Sponge block instead of Lady Fingers in their Tiramisu giving it a lighter flavor than what you might have had before. And the Chantilly Cream? OMG! Chef Agostino uses just a touch of Mascarpone cheese to make it light and fluffy.  Trust me, Divanites, it was REALLY DIFFICULT to not lick the plate after this offering.

During our meal, I had the pleasure of interviewing a couple visiting from Arizona and Alabama. Patty and Johnny came to Vincenzo’s on the suggestion of the concierge at Marriott. Having a discriminating pallet for Italian food, Johnny ordered a easy Pasta with Tomato Sauce and Basil because, “If they can do that really well, you know you’ve found the ideal trusty Italian restaurant in Louisville.” The outcome?  “It was the most astonishing sauce I’ve ever tasted,” he boasted.

The staff doesn’t care that you stick around for a while. That is what the dining experience is all about, my friends. Good drink, good food, good friends, and feeling like you’ve been a part of an event for the evening. Even if the event is just to celebrate Friday.

Chef Agostino and Christopher Sollner (Catering Director Extraordinaire), I hope you enjoyed my review, as much as I enjoyed spending my evening with you and your staff at Vincenzo’s.

So do me a favor Divanettes and Divanados, if I’m ever on death row, make sure to tell them to have Vincenzo’s and Chef Agostino cook my last meal. But before you depart to complete that bucket list of your own, go downtown and enjoy dining bliss at Vincenzo’s… and tell them the Louisville Dining Diva sent you.

Ciao Bella!

~Diva

Cielito Lindo (Bourdon) – Dusolina Giannini (soprano), Electrola ca 1929 (German pressing) THIS CLIP IS DEDICATED WITH MY WARM MEMORY TO MY MEXICAN FRIENDS: SAMUEL, LORELLE AND JORDI !!! —————————————————– NOTE: Dusolina GIANNINI was American-Italian soprano (1902 1986) born in Philadelphia to Italian parents. She studied with her father, Ferruccio Giannini, who was a tenor and ran his own opera company. Her mom Antonietta Briglia-Giannini was an excellent violinist. At the age of thirteen Dusolina sang Azucena in her father’s company. Later she continued her studies with a world famous Polish soprano, Marcella Sembrich (Marcelina Sembrich – Kocha?ska). And it was in New York where there was the scene of her first triumph. She substituted for the indisposed Anna Case at a concert in Carnegie Hall. In 1924 she started recording for the Victor company. The same year she was very successful in London. In 1925 she made her debut as Aida at the Hamburg Say Opera. She appeared there until 1930. In 1928 she sang a number of highly successful performances at Covent Garden. She was invited to sing Aida in a complete opera recording (her partners were Pertile, Minghini-Cattaneo and Inghilleri under Sabajno). This recording enjoyed nearly legendary fame and familiarized her study throughout the world. She never actually sang at La Scala. In 1934/35 she appeared as Donna Anna at the Salzburg Festival. Q&A: How cheaply can I visit Florida for summer 2011?

Question by Christine: How inexpensively can I visit Florida for summer 2011?
My son would like to go to Disney World, I’d like to visit Cape Canaveral and the Keys (and see some of the wild life resorts down there). I’m trying to work out whether or not a fly drive or a two centre holiday is best, or whether or not to book flights and sort out the rest online? I don’t need much in the way of facilities – and I would like to stay at least some of the time in something like a BandB (if it is possible) – even though if that is not doable I understand. The hotels in the brochures are lovely – but are also very impersonal!

Visit Orlando, Miami, Daytona, Naples, or Key West on your Florida Vacation

31 August 2010 by
Categories: Vacations

So you have saved enough money for a Florida vacation. You are very excited. You want to go to the beach but still have access to other amenities. But you don’t where to go.

Well there’s no superior place to go than to Florida. If your purpose is to have fun and relax, Florida is the perfect place to be.

Florida is known as the Sunshine Say because of its long stretches of sandy beaches, larger-than-life theme parks and near perfect climate all year round. It is because of these attractions, Florida is one of the most favourite holiday destinations in the world. Florida’s average temperature is in the mid 80′s in the summer, and the mid 70′s in the winter.

To experience Florida as its best, it is highly advisable that you rent a pass rental home or a beach front condo that would wage you with the perfect sand and sea holiday.
